  • First Ascent is cut closer to the body for a great, active fit with no bunching or binding. It is built as a complete system. All pieces - outerwear, insulating layers and baselayer - are cut so the body and sleeve lengths of each successive layer are slightly longer than the one underneath.

The Peak XV jacket I bought from Whittaker is a top notch jacket. After receiving it I went for a 2 mile walk in sub 0 temperatures and it was very warm and toasty. I liked the collar, nice and high and warm. I also have a Patagonia Fitz Roy down hooded jacket, and in my opinion the Peak XV is twice the jacket at a lower price. Thanks Eddie Bauer and thank you WHITTAKER Mountaineering.

Great jacket. Used as my primary insulation source in the Alaskan arctic. Kept me warm at -43 f with just a merino wool shirt while on long walks. I can't imagine needing anything warmer. Not a lot of bells and whistles which is great because that means the weight is down instead of extra zippers, fabric etc. The best part is the price. Any comparable jacket with 850 fill and this warm would cost twice as much or more. Buy it now before Eddie Bauer realizes they could probably sell for $400 or more.

Excellent overall. Warm and fits well, ie tru to size. I'm 6-0 and 195 with 34 inch arms and on extension the sleeves are the tiniest bit short. Down lofts well and no thin points in the coat. Zipper could be two way from the bottom. Others worn: Marmot 8000m, Mtn Hardwr Subzero Parka and Jacket, TNF Nuptse and 2 differnt iterations of Himalaya Parka. This is a reasonable summer Rainier and other Cascades parka, probably not a strong choice for winter big mountains. Good value and solid performance.

This is an awesome parka. I got it as a lighter alternative to my Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero parka; it is lighter and more compact, but still extremely warm. For trips in the lower 48 states, I can't imagine really needing more. I took it on a winter trip to the Adirondacks in New York, and it kept me warm in camp and at summits, at temperatures of around -5F. I especially like the hood, which is so well designed that it truly fits well with and without a helmet.

This is a super warm jacket. I took this on a trip to Mt Washington and wore it while in camp. No problems. I have also worn this around town when it's in single digits. Again, it keeps me very warm.

Superior warmth and function for a darn right steal! I've worn this jacket in 10 degree ambient with a 45mph wind blowing... do the math,it was pretty cold, and not a hint of shiver when in this jacket. It is almost too warm at times. I have an indestructible Canada Goose for the extremes on flatland, but I have to say this one is just as warm! I'm a tall guy, and was pleased to see they make talls too - XL Tall was a perfect fit, with plenty of layering room, not that I even needed it! It sheds snow, water, dampness pretty good too. Integrated hood is formed right and provide good protection. FA did a good job with this one. Buy this one.

Pretty good jacket. I'm 5'7" 148 lbs, I got the small at first but it was too snug around the chest and tension in the back around the shouder blades. I returned it for a medium size which leaves some room for layering. I had to return this since there was lack of down (or should I say barely no down) on the inner part of the arms around the elbow area. It was dissapointing since there would be a cold spot around my inner arms. The small size I had at first didn't have this issue. So it may just have been this one I picked out. I will be getting another medium one in black. Both the ones I returned were in dark lava color. Overall, this is a great jacket, very warm, very puffy.

This parka is very warm. -24F in Fairbanks Alaska and I'm VERY comfortable with just a light weight base layer and this jacket. A lot of value for the money.

Sweet jacket for the price. Same weight as the Mountain Hardwear Sub-Zero Hooded jacket, but IMHO much warmer. The 850 fill down is lofty, the shell repels H2O in ice and snow form quite well. Sat in the snow for a few hours as an instructor at a winter camp building snow caves in Minnesota with no moisture build up and it kept me warm in -5 with no hint of cold coming through. Pro: Warm Light Weather Resistant Cons: needs a better stuffsack. My winter sleeping bag packs down smaller than this jacket. Larger interior pockets. I want to keep more than an i-pod and a gu gel warm. I'm 6'1" 185 I could've gotten a medium, but went with a large as I normally wear a few layers underneath it. It's a generous cut.

This is a great jacket. i took it to Mt. Washington, NH just last week and it was amazing. Above treeline it was -2 degrees, with 60 mph winds. I wore this jacket with a shell and one base layer and was very warm and comfortable. Also what I really liked was that the hood worked well in the wind and that the material is very water resistant. I had no problems with moisture when it came to all the snow and ice. All in all this was a great and warm jacket for a very good price.

I bought this parka with the hope of one day climbing with it, but since I've only had it for a month, it's served me extremely well while walking the dog (and standing there watching him find just the right spot) in the single digit temps here in Montana. I usually wear a t-shirt under it, and it keeps me so warm, sometimes I don't wear gloves. The only suggestion I have for an improvement is that the zipper is a little quick to snag. I could see that being more frustrating with gloves on, in the dark, on a windy mountain. I'd like a larger inside pocket too. The hand warmer pockets are nice. I'm 5'8" 170 lbs, and the large fits me with some extra room for layers. Medium is pretty form fitting. When I wear it, it feels like I never left the sleeping bag.

This is an excellent jacket for the money. I ordered a Marmot Greenland jacket ($360) and sent it back because there was a lack of down in the sleeves. I am much happier with this jacket.
