This is what you reach for when the guides say, "Parkas on!" during a rest stop and it's 5F below zero. Named for the surveyor's notation of the mountain later known as Everest. Filled with ultra-warm 850 fill power premium northern European goose down. The guides wear this to 26,000 feet, then switch to the full-body version for the summit push. Built to withstand the harshest conditions on the highest mountains.
Note: The color Ink Red has reinforcements on the shoulders and arms and also has water bottle pockets on the interior. Both the Lava and Black do not have these features.

"From Antarctic blizzards to Himalayan summits, this jacket will heat you up. Nothing beats 850-fill down for insulation and packability. Take this jacket on your next extreme adventure."
- Ed Viesturs

"My Peak XV is the perfect loft and weight for the big mountains I work on. It moves with me and doesn't get in my way while protecting me from serious cold, yet it pack down neat and small when things get more civilized."
- Dave Hahn

  • First Ascent is cut closer to the body for a great, active fit with no bunching or binding. It is built as a complete system. All pieces - outerwear, insulating layers and baselayer - are cut so the body and sleeve lengths of each successive layer are slightly longer than the one underneath.

I have spent several winters in the Midwest and am tired of putting on and taking off layers every day for months straight. I was searching for a "grab off the hook and go" jacket, and I found it here. I love this jacket - no complaints at all. The fabric lining by the chin and in the pockets feels really soft. The down stays distributed. I find it's warmer for me just to put my hands in the pockets than to wear gloves. I usually wear a t-shirt or button-up shirt under it, so it's plenty warm between 10-35 degrees.

The Peak XV Jacket is great! Low price and high quality. It not only keeps you cozy warm, but you look good staying that way. A home run to me First Ascent! I have used it here in Colorado to summit winter 14ers and the jacket held up its end. Super!

Decent build plenty warm! yet to wear it up in the mountains but worn for a day on the ice whilst fishing (with no hut) @ -15'C with plenty of wind and was heaps warm enough. Seems great value when compared to other brands (I got the 2010 model I believe its about 2" shorter that the 2011) but at $300 no complaints here and fit is fantastic! :-)

I took this jacket to my Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking. The jacket is amazingly warm and waterproof. It folds in to very compact size and is very light weight. The only problem i noticed was that sweat was having hard drying away, so always felt cold after taking off the jacket at the camps.

WOW this jacket is warm! Probably the warmest jacket on the planet. I ordered this and a Subzero SL and though the Subzero had a few features this didn't (like water bottle pocket and reinforced fabric areas), the Peak XV was just sooo much nicer overall. Way more cozy, puffier, warmer. Chock full of down (making it about a pound heavier, unfortunately). I preferred the Peak XV's integrated hood, as it was far warmer and comfier. The zipper is also much nicer, without the annoying flap, velco, and buttons. Lastly, the fit was superior (both in Med, and I'm 5'10", 155lb). Tho the Subzero is a great jacket, and a worthy competitor to this one, the Peak definitely takes the cake.

I ordered this jacket because my research indicated it would be the warmest jacket around, and as a woman that hates being cold, I wanted a warm jacket. I intend to use this jacket while climbing mountains, but I recently used this jacket in the middle of Alaska at -30*F temps. I was warm indeed - with just a base layer underneath. I was not even exerting myself physically - which would add to one's warmth. I was extremely pleased with all the pockets inside (2 large water bottle pockets and another pocket for money/phone/whatever) - sometimes I forgot something was even in an inside pocket! I am 5'7", 137 lbs, and ordered the men's small. It fit perfectly - with plenty of room for another insulation layer. I received many compliments on the jacket too. Absolutely fabulous.

I think all the other reviews have pretty much covered it... this is a super warm jacket for seriously cold conditions. I have not had a chance to take it anywhere near its limits, but have sat around in about 15 F with a wool base layer underneath and was warm. The jacket is definitely not "light and fast", but considering how much heat it traps, it still has a great weight to warmth ratio and good packability. Time will tell how durable it is, but the materials seem strong and quality is good. I got the 2010 version and Im very happy that it has large inner pockets. Im 5'10" 160 lbs. and the medium fits perfectly. I really dont think one can do better for the price.

Wow, this is the nicest and warmest down jacket I've ever owned. I've worked outside in heavy Parkas in the past but found the bulky jackets uncomfortable and heavy. This jacket is very warm, and so light you don't even know you are wearing it. I found it actually so warm that when skiing at minus 25 Celsius I had to open the zipper to cool off a bit. Climbing with this jacket and a pack may be too warm for a summer climb but it scrunches down into a small sack so is good for backup or cool overnight camps. I like to be warm so this jacket is my favorite so far.

This was a clearly excellent jacket, with tons of high quality down. I loved the super filled hood, felt like wearing a space suit. But, it was waaay too short in the torso. The damn thing sat above my belt buckle. I may be 6'3, but 6'3" isn't that tall for an XL in mountaineering gear. I mean, how fat do you have to be before mountaineering isn't your main activity anyway? Does every body really need a jacket that fits above a harness? just put a double zip on it and give us a jacket with a couple more inches in the torso.

This is one of the warmest puffy down jackets that there is. The hood is permanently attached where it cannot come loose. The length is slightly longer than other jackets. The detailing and quality is excellent. The RMI version is one the finest bargains in coldweather gear. Combined with an elephants foot it makes for a fine nest without a sleeping bag. Highly recomended.

This is the best jacket ever for extreme cold weather; and I've tried quite a few. I was at the top of Mount Rainier in a white out storm and I was keeping warm in it. I took it to the top of Pike's Peak in -20 degree, gale force winds and felt warm and cozy. You do have to be careful with it because it can be easily punctured with crampons. It needs some reinforcement, but I see the new models have that built in. Great jacket for extremely cold and windy conditions.

An excellent jacket: very warm and comfy, packed with down. The hood is huge, when you put it on, your head is very warm too, but when it is in down position-very uncomfortable to move your head. My jacket, however, came with a fault-on a back, inside of one of the "horizontal bricks" there is barely any down. Will have to return.

I've used this jacket on Rainier and McKinley and its never failed me yet...very warm, has convenient pockets and zippers that are easy to work, even with gloves. The hood fits perfectly with or without a helmet.

The peak 15 down jacket... pure and undefiled mountaineering is a company like first ascent. I love the water bottle warmers, and the quality of down as it is a european goose which is the best. Other companies have great jackets, but don't use european which is a deal breaker for me. Okay and 850 fill isn't bad either. Can't settle in high altitude so i go with first ascent period. Wouldn't have any other jacket.

This is a great jacket. I bought it to use on a trip to climb Izta and Pico de Orizaba down in Mexico (keeping potential trips to colder venues such as Aconcagua and Denali in mind). I didn't use it for much other that the summits because it was just too warm, but for the few hours I wore it, I was very happy with it. It is very comfortable and VERY warm (and it made for a great pillow too...)

I wanted a baffled down jacket, whose outer fabric can take some punches. I've tried Marmot, Mountain Hardwear and Patagonia but couldn't find it. So there it is now, the unbeatable down jacket! Twice the jacket as the Patagonia Fitz Roy for less money. It's stuffed with down with an amazingly soft lining. There is no jacket with this performance at $300, and even at $500 you might not find a serious opponent. It has all you need, and nothing you don't. Pockets in the right places, perfect fit with or without harness, awesome hood. A high quality sleeping bag put into a jacket! I'm 5'9", 38" chest 140lbs, small fits perfectly with little room for layering - you won't need any thick layers, this thing heats you up all by itself!

perfect!!No extraneous stuff and minimal snaggy velcro. Now First Ascent needs a synthetic version and I'll be complete.

I bought this jacket right before I went up Mt. Rainier with RMI. It is a awesome jacket and performed great. I was never cold with it on. I look forward to using it this winter when I get the chance.

To Sunny, Warmth is very important, especially with heart conditions on the line. To clarify, what will he be using this for? Look at the specs for the jackets. The MTN H ABS 0 parka is heavier, and made with 800 fill, while the Peak XV is lighter, with 850 fill. Likely the difference in wieght is due to the extra (unnecessary) feature on the Mtn hardware jacket. The Eddie Bauer may be slightly warmer and lighter, but I think the two compare pretty close. As long as you're looking at the Absolute zero Parka and not the sub zero, which is only 650 fill. Might recommend going to the peak XV full suit. That would be the next step in warmth.

Great jacket, excellent value. I have one product improvement recommendation for the design team: there really needs to be an internal Nalgene bottle pocket so you can yank that parka out of your summit pack with the water bottle stashed there ready to go... With that simple feature added this jacket would truly have everything you need and nothing else. Staff Note: Problem solved! The 2010 version of the Peak XV now has two water bottle pockets.

Sub-zero wind chill, blowing snow, this jacket is up to the challenge. Perfect for winter and alpine conditions, very warm & comfortable. Glad I have it!

Exceptional down jacket. I wore this while climbing Mt. Shasta and when I put it on during breaks I became instantly warm. It was perfect when the weather turned bad with 25 mph winds and below 0 degree temperatures. I cannot recommend it enough. It is light, comfortable, and incredibly warm.

Its overkill for the Sierras but nice to have insurance and it is nice to have something to sleep in so I can carry a lighter sleeping bag. I look forward to using it on Mt. Shasta and Mt. Rainer. The few times I have used it on extremely cold days it was bullet proof.

Used this on a couple of Cascade and Sierra winter hikes - great for going over my layers during belay/rest breaks. I bought Large for my 6'0 170 size and it is perfect to get on over my climbing stuff - the large goes easily over my helmet - the only drawback is that it does not have a bottom zipper, so it interferes with my harness on ascents or during belays.

Instead of writing a real review here, i am actually trying to get some advise here. I just bought this jacket and Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero parka and need to decide which one to keep. The only thing counts here is the warmth. Jacket is for my Dad, he is extremely afraid of being cold because of his heart condition. So, if you have worn both jackets, please, give me some ideas, especially, which one is warmer? And size wise, do you wear same size of both jacket? BTW, I already bought him Mountain Hardwear sub-Zero parka and that one is definitely not warm enough. Thanks in advance.

I needed a parka warmer than my Feathered Friends Helios for winter in the NE. This jacket will easily take me down to -15. The fabric/jacket is not light weight but for the money this jacket is a great buy. The hood fit well and the material is water resistant, I had no problems in a wet snow storm with no shell. The only thing I miss are large pockets on the inside to hold a water bottle or two when the temp drops. What is it with the ipod size pockets these days? The fit is average to generous giving me some layering room in a XL.

This is a very warm and really puffy jacket. I bought this for a three day mixed/ice-climbing course in Montana. It was a little overkill even for the February cold in the Hyalite Canyon. Also, after wearing for a few days, a couple of feathers did pop out. Good: Very very warm, good size pockets, looks good and light weight. Cons: Puffy and big.

The Peak XV jacket I bought from Whittaker is a top notch jacket. After receiving it I went for a 2 mile walk in sub 0 temperatures and it was very warm and toasty. I liked the collar, nice and high and warm. I also have a Patagonia Fitz Roy down hooded jacket, and in my opinion the Peak XV is twice the jacket at a lower price. Thanks Eddie Bauer and thank you WHITTAKER Mountaineering.

Great jacket. Used as my primary insulation source in the Alaskan arctic. Kept me warm at -43 f with just a merino wool shirt while on long walks. I can't imagine needing anything warmer. Not a lot of bells and whistles which is great because that means the weight is down instead of extra zippers, fabric etc. The best part is the price. Any comparable jacket with 850 fill and this warm would cost twice as much or more. Buy it now before Eddie Bauer realizes they could probably sell for $400 or more.

Excellent overall. Warm and fits well, ie tru to size. I'm 6-0 and 195 with 34 inch arms and on extension the sleeves are the tiniest bit short. Down lofts well and no thin points in the coat. Zipper could be two way from the bottom. Others worn: Marmot 8000m, Mtn Hardwr Subzero Parka and Jacket, TNF Nuptse and 2 differnt iterations of Himalaya Parka. This is a reasonable summer Rainier and other Cascades parka, probably not a strong choice for winter big mountains. Good value and solid performance.

This is an awesome parka. I got it as a lighter alternative to my Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero parka; it is lighter and more compact, but still extremely warm. For trips in the lower 48 states, I can't imagine really needing more. I took it on a winter trip to the Adirondacks in New York, and it kept me warm in camp and at summits, at temperatures of around -5F. I especially like the hood, which is so well designed that it truly fits well with and without a helmet.

This is a super warm jacket. I took this on a trip to Mt Washington and wore it while in camp. No problems. I have also worn this around town when it's in single digits. Again, it keeps me very warm.

Superior warmth and function for a darn right steal! I've worn this jacket in 10 degree ambient with a 45mph wind blowing... do the math,it was pretty cold, and not a hint of shiver when in this jacket. It is almost too warm at times. I have an indestructible Canada Goose for the extremes on flatland, but I have to say this one is just as warm! I'm a tall guy, and was pleased to see they make talls too - XL Tall was a perfect fit, with plenty of layering room, not that I even needed it! It sheds snow, water, dampness pretty good too. Integrated hood is formed right and provide good protection. FA did a good job with this one. Buy this one.

Pretty good jacket. I'm 5'7" 148 lbs, I got the small at first but it was too snug around the chest and tension in the back around the shouder blades. I returned it for a medium size which leaves some room for layering. I had to return this since there was lack of down (or should I say barely no down) on the inner part of the arms around the elbow area. It was dissapointing since there would be a cold spot around my inner arms. The small size I had at first didn't have this issue. So it may just have been this one I picked out. I will be getting another medium one in black. Both the ones I returned were in dark lava color. Overall, this is a great jacket, very warm, very puffy.

Sweet jacket for the price. Same weight as the Mountain Hardwear Sub-Zero Hooded jacket, but IMHO much warmer. The 850 fill down is lofty, the shell repels H2O in ice and snow form quite well. Sat in the snow for a few hours as an instructor at a winter camp building snow caves in Minnesota with no moisture build up and it kept me warm in -5 with no hint of cold coming through. Pro: Warm Light Weather Resistant Cons: needs a better stuffsack. My winter sleeping bag packs down smaller than this jacket. Larger interior pockets. I want to keep more than an i-pod and a gu gel warm. I'm 6'1" 185 I could've gotten a medium, but went with a large as I normally wear a few layers underneath it. It's a generous cut.

This is a great jacket. i took it to Mt. Washington, NH just last week and it was amazing. Above treeline it was -2 degrees, with 60 mph winds. I wore this jacket with a shell and one base layer and was very warm and comfortable. Also what I really liked was that the hood worked well in the wind and that the material is very water resistant. I had no problems with moisture when it came to all the snow and ice. All in all this was a great and warm jacket for a very good price.

I bought this parka with the hope of one day climbing with it, but since I've only had it for a month, it's served me extremely well while walking the dog (and standing there watching him find just the right spot) in the single digit temps here in Montana. I usually wear a t-shirt under it, and it keeps me so warm, sometimes I don't wear gloves. The only suggestion I have for an improvement is that the zipper is a little quick to snag. I could see that being more frustrating with gloves on, in the dark, on a windy mountain. I'd like a larger inside pocket too. The hand warmer pockets are nice. I'm 5'8" 170 lbs, and the large fits me with some extra room for layers. Medium is pretty form fitting. When I wear it, it feels like I never left the sleeping bag.

This is an excellent jacket for the money. I ordered a Marmot Greenland jacket ($360) and sent it back because there was a lack of down in the sleeves. I am much happier with this jacket.
