- First Ascent is cut closer to the body for a great, active fit with no bunching or binding. It is built as a complete system. All pieces - outerwear, insulating layers and baselayer - are cut so the body and sleeve lengths of each successive layer are slightly longer than the one underneath.

purchased this baselayer and the similar merino wool 1/4 zip. Between the two I prefer the wool over this base layer. Pitting is a frequent problem and sweat stains the material until washed out. I don't think this would be such a drawback with a black color, but I purchased the 'ash' colored one so pitting becomes obvious. not as warm or comfortable as merino wool but silky and light it dries quickly and has kept me warm through many days of winter biking.

i love it. i have two of these now, and i think they're great. i just wore one while running a half marathon, and it was so comfortable. my wife bought a couple of the women's version, and she loves her's as well. $50 is a little high for me to spend on a baselayer, but any time they're on sale, i'll keep snatching them up.

I bought this base layer for a recent climb on Mount Rainier. This was recommended by the guides at RMI, but I did a lot of shopping around prior to the trip to see if I could find something similar for less money. The short answer was no. Everything else I found either didn't have the features (1/4 zip, breathability, stretch) or did and cost significantly more. After wearing it on the mountain I was even more convinced that I made the right decision. The material is VERY comfortable, performs well, and looks good doing it. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great base layer and a great value.
