Performs Up High, Looks Great In Town
A great insulating piece and outer jacket all in one. The hood locks in heat when you're in icy temps but looks good off when you're grabbing a drink in town.

"I call it the apparel multitool. I wear it for warmth, for light wind protection. Over my baselayer. Under my outer shell. This jacket does it all." Peter Whittaker

"An all day piece that I have a hard time taking off when playtime is over! Use it as an insulation piece or as a wind resistant breathable outer layer on moderate weather days." Chad Peele

  • First Ascent is cut closer to the body for a great, active fit with no bunching or binding. It is built as a complete system. All pieces - outerwear, insulating layers and baselayer - are cut so the body and sleeve lengths of each successive layer are slightly longer than the one underneath.

Love this jacket wear it around the house, snowboarding, ice climbing, mountain flying, everything and anything :-) Makes for a great versatile mid layer great fit and stretchy enough for the most crazy of a activity, sheds wind well, hood makes a suitable replacement for balaclava and is toasty warm in the coldest of weather with the addition of a shell :-)

This piece is a must have mid layer, I've tried many different layering schemes and the hangfire's snug flexible material isn't binding by any means. The hood is a perfect fit with just the right amount of play. I still use a balaclava, but I shave my head so the added layer is a plus. This is a layer I spend entire expeditions in.

Outstanding buy when you consider how often you'll use it. Surprisingly warm for such a light item of clothing. I wore this over a thin merino wool base layer on Shasta, Hood and Rainier both in camp and (usually with a MH Dragon soft shell or my First Ascent Rain jacket) when climbing. The hood is very soft and fits well over a helmet. My favorite piece of clothing for hiking, backpacking and alpine climbing in the lower 48.

I was a cold climbing Rainier in summer of 2010. Before my 2011 trip, I evaluated my layers, talked to some guides about their light insulating layers, being cold, etc. I opted to upgrade from the 1/4 zip cloud layer to this piece. It was more insulating, had a zipper that I could use to regulate more and had the hood which would also allow ease of temp control. I noticed most the guides used hooded pieces in 2010 putting the idea in my head. I could not have made a better choice. Warm, lightweight, soft, and the hood is awesome. I wore this during my entire trip including to the summit of Rainier in July 2011 on a horrible weather day. Worth every penny sums it up and perfect midlayer piece for climbing Rainier.

I used this hoodie on a 2 month sea kayaking trip. I literally used it every day. I cannot say enough about it or its construction. I think it is my favorite piece of clothing! I used it hard and it doesn't show any signs of wear. That is more than I can say for my body.

I have a 2010 model of this jacket and my only complaint is that the opening in the hood is large, so you can't really use it as a balaclava. Other than that, it's an excellent piece of gear.

This is in my top 5 favorite pieces of gear. The hood is priceless for temperature control in an instant. I love the mid-layer warmth it provides in cooler conditions and the high breathability with warmth and wind protection as an outer layer in mild conditions. They thought this one through and hit a homerun for layering versatility and comfort. The two layer hood is really cozy.

Wore the Hangfire on Denali, and didn't take it off most days. Very comfortable. It stretches in all the right places, and the hood fits great and can be used instead of a balaclava. I am 6'2", and being able to order a tall size helped keep my back from being exposed. Definitely a great product worth the money.
