- First Ascent is cut closer to the body for a great, active fit with no bunching or binding. It is built as a complete system. All pieces - outerwear, insulating layers and baselayer - are cut so the body and sleeve lengths of each successive layer are slightly longer than the one underneath.

I use this jacket as an insulation layer, but have used it as an outer layer also. I don't recommend using it as an outer layer if you are working because it is very thin and I would think it would snag and tear, but I haven't had this happen. And though it is thin, the fabric is very strong. I was surprised at the immediate warmth that this jacket gives. It is very light and thin. I am 5'10" and 180# and the large fits me perfectly. Mine did leak a little down, but really insignificant. I give it the highest marks and would definitely buy again.

I live in Northern Maine and I wear this down sweater almost all the time. It's super lightweight, comfortable, repels ice and water, and keeps you warm even in howling wind. My only complaint about this sweater is that it can sometimes leak down through the seams and poke out through the material. But I think the sweater has a lifetime guarantee, so not a big deal. Overall it's a good investment.

I love this jacket. Perfect for late season climbing or just wearing around town. Amazingly light and compact compared to my normal big puffy jacket. Love it. Warning -it does leak feathers, but this is fairly normal for this type of jacket.

I like the product. It is obviously well-designed and constructed with high quality materials. The weather here has not been cold enough to wear the sweater with any regularity. My only complaint is that the sizing is too small. I wear an extra large shirt normally. The extra large sweater is very tight. Didn't expect that.

This sweater has excellent insulating qualities against cold and wind, and at least repels light rain and snow. I used this sweater as an outer layer while hiking in the Bavarian Alps in January and found it almost too warm during strenuous activity. As reported by others, this jacket is very light weight, packs and travels well. It does lose a few feathers, but similar to other down products I've owned.

This is a great product. Mine has lost the occasional feather but nothing significant. The warmth to weight ratio is incredible. I also have the sub-zero for cold weather but it is big and bulky and too warm if it is in the 20's or 30's. I have used this jacket on recent snowshoe and nordic skiing activities and it has performed well. The service and shipping from Whittaker Mountaineering was excellent.

I love the Downlight Sweater. The weight to warmth ratio is a very impressive feature of this jacket. I like to throw it on when I get to Camp Muir and it keeps me warm, even when the weather gets ugly. It also compresses so well that You can stick it in your bag and pretty much forget about it. Best buy of the season! Thanks FA and WM

I am a big fan of FA and Whittaker Mountaineering in general. But I have to rate this sweater as average because of the down loss. I read the many reviews claiming this issue and wrote to the shop inquiring about this BEFORE I bought the coat. I was assured that the issue had been addressed by the staff so I purchased the sweater. It leaks like crazy. The up-side is that it is very warm and packs great. They need to address this issue though.

Light weight. Very warm. Some down loss which can be nerve wracking but probably is normal when item is new. Too early to review confidently.

I previously used the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero. This is a fantastic piece of insulation. The mere size decrease is a huge upgrade, but the addition of fantastic windproof capabilities is what I needed. Having to eliminate layers is the single most important thing when trying to battle changing elements. This jacket does the trick in cold wind and light mist or snow.

Just received this jacket in the mail and I am very happy with it! Sent in good condition and in a timely manner. After suffering through last year's bitter winter here in NYC I wanted a down coat before the winter chill sets in, but I wanted one that's not too bulky and yet v warm (also one I can "layer" clothes underneath -- sweaters, etc -- as NYC stores, bldgs and apts are always overheated). This baby fits the bill. Size medium looks great on me (I am slim and about 5'10"). I put it on and immediately felt snug and warm. I will also use it on my hiking trips of course, but my only concern is the outer material looks a tad "delicate" ... hope it doesn't get torn. I will definitely buy more FA products ... great job!

Fantastic Product. The most comfortable, best styled, cool colored, light, warm, compactable coat I've ever owned. And, makes a great pillow when you're camping at altitude. I liked it so much, I bought a second one, because I know I'll wear out the first one!
A must for the outdoor, active hiker, climber, whatever!

Everything I need and nothing I dont. The only problem with it is that the medium was too big and the small fits perfect except when layering gets a little tight especially around the neck. But I guess thats my fault for being my size.
Great Sweater

Well I really like this down product. It's warm, light, and very comfortable. But you can't wear anything black underneath. You end up with white feathers all over the place, and they don't brush off very easily.

I only rate this product as average because of how it leaks down. I returned this sweater 8 hours after I bought it simply because of that. Everything else about the sweater though, I love. It is very warm, and the goose down that was still in the jacket certainly was doing its job. It was also comfortable, and fit me well. It barely weighed anything, and did not restrict my movement at all. Plus, the blue color looks great! However, the amount of down it leaked was the most frustrating part about this product, and is the reason I returned it. If this jacket was downproof, it would certainly be a 10/10, and I would still own it.

I have been wearing this sweater almost daily, starting in the beginning of December. I wear it at work where I am outside all day. I usually have a base layer or two, this sweater, and then a windbreaker over it.
First I will give the positives:
-This sweater keeps me TOASTY WARM down to the single digits with the above layering scheme.
-The fit is superb. I first ordered a Patagonia Down Sweater and it was way too boxy. This thing fits close to the body like a sweater should.
-I love the stretchy waistband and wrist cuffs. They seal out the wind and add to the overall aesthetic.
-There is a good DWR on it.
The Negatives:
-It leeks down like crazy. My shirt is covered in small white feathers on a daily basis. I really wish the material was downproof. I understand the need to keep it light, but this is making me re-think my decision to return the Patagonia for this.
-The chin guard doesn't actually cover the top of the zipper. It is too short and, therefore, ineffective. My chin gets chewed up by it.
So, what could be an excellent product is only a good product.
