The lightest, warmest insulation. Period. 800 fill power premium northern European goose down. The ripstop shell is soft to the touch, yet both water- and abrasion-resistant. Forty-six years ago, the ancestor of the Downlight was a favorite of Jim Whittaker when he became the first American to summit Everest. Now, Ed Viesturs wears this new generation. Ed also uses it as his outer layer in cold, dry conditions to save weight. Weighs just 13.39 oz.; packs into its own pocket. Machine wash. Precision layering.

"For most situations other than extreme conditions, this lightweight, packable down sweater will do the trick. You'll be toasty and warm wearing this featherweight piece." -Ed Viesturs

  • First Ascent is cut closer to the body for a great, active fit with no bunching or binding. It is built as a complete system. All pieces - outerwear, insulating layers and baselayer - are cut so the body and sleeve lengths of each successive layer are slightly longer than the one underneath.

I only rate this product as average because of how it leaks down. I returned this sweater 8 hours after I bought it simply because of that. Everything else about the sweater though, I love. It is very warm, and the goose down that was still in the jacket certainly was doing its job. It was also comfortable, and fit me well. It barely weighed anything, and did not restrict my movement at all. Plus, the blue color looks great! However, the amount of down it leaked was the most frustrating part about this product, and is the reason I returned it. If this jacket was downproof, it would certainly be a 10/10, and I would still own it.

I have been wearing this sweater almost daily, starting in the beginning of December. I wear it at work where I am outside all day. I usually have a base layer or two, this sweater, and then a windbreaker over it. First I will give the positives: -This sweater keeps me TOASTY WARM down to the single digits with the above layering scheme. -The fit is superb. I first ordered a Patagonia Down Sweater and it was way too boxy. This thing fits close to the body like a sweater should. -I love the stretchy waistband and wrist cuffs. They seal out the wind and add to the overall aesthetic. -There is a good DWR on it. The Negatives: -It leeks down like crazy. My shirt is covered in small white feathers on a daily basis. I really wish the material was downproof. I understand the need to keep it light, but this is making me re-think my decision to return the Patagonia for this. -The chin guard doesn't actually cover the top of the zipper. It is too short and, therefore, ineffective. My chin gets chewed up by it. So, what could be an excellent product is only a good product.
