The Raven features a 17-4 investment cast stainless steel head that was designed with both beauty and function in mind. This svelte piolet has a neutral-clearance pick which tapers back to a wasp-waisted platform. Finger notches on each side of the head make for a secure grip and allow for quick, smooth hand rotation when going into a self-arrest. This beauty chops steps, clears snow and blasts ice with ease. It's also light and lithe, the 7075-T6 extruded shaft cuts weight to a minimum without a sacrifice in strength.

Gets the job done. I have had the chance to use the Raven for several glacier trips and have never had a problem with it. The adze and pick are nicely shaped to carry in self-belay and self-arrest positions. The metal does get cold if holding in one had for a long period of time, but most do. I am pleased with the purchase that I made.

For the purposes of basic mountaineering and glacier travel this ax is a standard. Its solid, simple, design, and bomber construction make it dependable in any situation. I've had mine for about a year and have found it to work great for my needs, mainly just glacier travel/peace of mind. It arrested a very icy slide just minutes after another of our group took a long slide, unable to arrest with the ice-tools he was carrying at the time. I've found this ax to be light and comfortable in the hand, and not a worry at all after hours of travel.

This is a solid piece of mountaineering equipment. Light enough for long hauls but yet strong enough to beat in a picket or two.
