Your Buying Guide For
Backpacks
The right pack isn’t about liters or flashy features — it’s about fit, comfort, and dependability when you need it most. Whether you’re hauling gear to Camp Muir or packing light for a summit push, your backpack should disappear on your back and let you focus on the climb.

What size pack is right for me?
Day hikes & everyday use: 15–30 liters (just enough for snacks, layers, water, and essentials).
Weekend trips: 35–50 liters (room for extra clothes, shelter, and food).
Extended trips or mountaineering: 60+ liters (designed to haul technical gear and overnight systems).
How do I know if a backpack will fit well?
Fit matters more than features. Look for:
- A hip belt that takes most of the weight off your shoulders.
- Adjustable torso length so the pack rides where it should.
- Padded shoulder straps that don’t dig in when loaded.
- Trying on with weight (if possible) is the best way to judge comfort.
Do I need a technical pack or a general one?
General hiking packs are versatile and lighter — great for most trails, travel, or everyday outdoor use.
Technical packs (with rope carry systems, reinforced frames, or gear loops) are ideal if you’re climbing, ski touring, or carrying heavy, specialized loads.
