Patagonia R1® Hoody Men's

A venerated alpine essential, the R1® Hoody remains the optimal hooded midlayer for the full spectrum of mountain endeavors – now made with lighter and more breathable Polartec® Power Grid™ for outstanding stretch, compressibility and durability. More than fifteen years and cranking, Patagonia's R1® fabric still sets the bar for alpine efficiency, and the R1 Hoody’s legendary versatility begins there: the high/low grid interior (Polartec® Power Grid™ polyester) has been redesigned exclusively for Patagonia so it’s even lighter and more breathable. It stretches, traps heat and compresses to practically nothing, with the pared-down but versatile design features climbers and backcountry skiers need: a snug-fitting balaclava-style hood, a minimalist deep-venting front zipper with a soft zipper garage that keeps your chin comfy, and a Variable Conditions Cuff with discreet on-seam thumb loops and a spiral-stitch construction so you can push up the sleeves with no ensuing forearm pump. With off-shoulder seams for pack-wearing comfort, a long torso for layering under a harness, an exterior chest pocket and Polygiene® permanent odor control.

I love this highly versatile layer. I use it as a baselayer on colder climbs and also as a mid layer on Rainier and other summer climbs. It's durable too, I got my first R1 for a Denali climb 5 years ago and it is still in my kit today.

Bomber basic kit

It's simply my favorite layer in between. Not a great wind blocker (not its intended use) but performs in all other regards as a great layering piece.

Use Situation: Cold weather climbing
