Located in Andes Mountains about 17 miles south of Quito, Ecuador, Cotopaxi stands at 19,347 feet. Cotopaxi is an active volcano with its last eruption happening in 1940. The first successful ascent of the mountain was made in 1872 by geologist Wilhelm Reiss. Cotopaxi sees most of its attempts made from the north side where there is a hut located at 15,744 feet.
