Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, standing at 29,029 feet, and located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas. The border between China and Nepal runs directly over the summit of Everest. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to successfully reach the summit on May 29, 1953 via the South Col Route, and Jim Whittaker became the first American to summit Mt. Everest via the South Col Route on May 1, 1963, alongside Sherpa Nawang Gombu. Lou Whittaker led the first American ascent of the North Col of Mount Everest in 1984. Today, there are two main routes: The southeast ridge from Nepal and the north ridge from Tibet. Most attempts at climbing the mountain are made during May, before the summer monsoon season.
