Your Buying Guide For
Carabiners and Belay Devices
Picking the right carabiners and belay device depends on your climbing style, rope systems, and the environments you’ll encounter. Here are some common questions answered.
Still have questions? Feel free to reach out!
What’s the difference between a locking and non-locking carabiner?
Locking carabiners feature a mechanism (screwgate, twist-lock, etc.) that prevents accidental opening. They’re used for belays, anchors, and any situation where security is critical. Non-locking carabiners are lighter and faster to clip, making them ideal for racking and protection.
Do I need an assisted-braking belay device?
Assisted-braking devices add an extra margin of safety by helping catch falls. They’re great for sport climbing and gyms, while tube-style devices remain lightweight, versatile, and preferred in alpine settings.
How many carabiners do I need?
The number varies by climb. A basic kit usually includes at least two lockers (belay + anchor), several non-lockers for quickdraws or gear racking, and a personal preference for extras. Alpine or trad climbing typically requires a larger assortment.
