Our Take

Classic Mountaineering Crampons

Dreaming of your next mountaineering objective? Don’t leave home without the VASAK crampons. With 12 points, they provide good stability and bite on terrain ranging from glaciers to snow couloirs. They’re available in two different binding systems to adapt to different types of footwear, with or without toe and heel welts.

Why We Love It
Margo Kerr

When the terrain gets steep and icy, two extra points make a real difference. The Vasak runs 12 points where most general mountaineering crampons stop at 10, giving you more contact and confidence on the kind of hard snow and steep glacier terrain you encounter on the upper mountain. The semi-automatic binding with a heel lever makes getting them on fast and secure, even in cold conditions with gloves on, and the adjustable forefoot fits a wide range of boot sizes and shapes without fussing. Like the rest of the Petzl crampon line, parts are interchangeable across models, so your binding investment carries over if you add a second pair. Honest limitation: these are not the tool for technical ice like the Kautz. For everything from the DC to the Cascades volcanoes, they cover the terrain confidently.

“I love that this crampon has twelve points for extra grip. I also appreciate that this crampon is semi-automatic and has the lever for the heel. This makes the crampon easy to put on. Additionally, this crampon is easy to size to your foot and the front of the crampon allows the user to tighten it down to any size/shape of boot.”
