Your Buying Guide For
Crampons
Crampons aren’t one-size-fits-all. The difference between a smooth glacier walk and front-pointing up bullet-hard alpine ice comes down to choosing the right tool. Below are some of the most common questions climbers ask when picking the perfect set.

What’s the difference between 10 and 12 point crampons?
Ten-point crampons are lighter and often used for glacier travel or moderate snow climbs, offering solid traction without extra weight. Twelve-point crampons add two forward-facing points, giving better security on steep terrain, alpine ice, and technical routes.
How do I know if crampons will fit my boots?
Crampons come in strap-on, hybrid, and step-in bindings. Match the binding style to your boot: strap-on works with most boots, hybrids need a heel welt, and step-ins require both heel and toe welts for a precise fit.
Do I need steel or aluminum crampons?
Steel crampons are durable and ideal for technical routes and mixed terrain. Aluminum crampons are lighter but wear down faster, making them best for ski mountaineering or objectives with less rock contact.
