Our Take

Versatile Ice Axe for Technical Mountaineering and Ice Climbing

QUARK is a versatile ice axe designed for technical mountaineering and ice climbing. Its balance and ICE pick allow solid placements on a variety of types of ice. The TRIGREST and GRIPREST handrests make it easy to handle and comfortable in many different situations. They provide a more effective handle grip for difficult sections. Entirely modular, the QUARK ice axe adapts easily to technical, varied terrain, such as snow couloirs, gullies, north faces, and ice routes.

Why We Love It
George Hedreen

When the terrain pushes into steep glacial ice, the Quark is the tool guides reach for. It has been around long enough to have a proven track record from the Kautz and North Ridge of Baker all the way to Patagonia and the Karakoram, and guides who have put five-plus seasons on them report no signs of failure. The steel quality is exceptional, and when picks do eventually wear down, replacement parts are available worldwide, which matters on remote expeditions. The curved shaft and geometry inspire confidence on steep ice in a way that more versatile tools simply do not match. One practical feature worth knowing: the trigger rest flips up when you transition from ice climbing to steep snow, allowing you to plunge the shaft more easily without the rest getting in the way. In a pinch, guides have placed pitons with these tools, not recommended but possible, which speaks to the build quality. Two honest limitations: at 50 centimeters the shaft is short, making them the wrong choice for classic glacier routes where a longer tool is an advantage. They are also on the heavier side, but for the terrain they are designed for, that weight buys confidence.

“I love the Petzl Quark tools. They can handle anything from the Kautz, to the North Ridge of Baker to water ice in Hyalite.”
— George Hedreen, RMI Guide
