So Nice You'll Forget You're Not Going Commando

Designed to manage the extremes of high-output exertion, Patagonia's Capilene® Midweight fabric hits the sweet spot of weight, breathability and wicking that, worn alone or with additional layers, is the essence of versatility.

A classic, all-around 100% recycled polyester baselayer. The smooth, soft face makes for easy layering. Hollow-core yarns and a diamond-grid back trap warm air, wick moisture and dry fast. HeiQ® Mint odor control keeps things fresh. Made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory.

Our Take

A poor baselayer can quickly turn a routine alpine start into a freezing, dangerous ordeal. We trust the Patagonia Capilene Midweight Bottoms because they strike the perfect balance between insulating warmth and high-output breathability. They are a dependable, everyday foundation we rely on to manage moisture under hardshell pants during a sweaty glacier slog and keep our legs warm when the sun goes down at high camp.

Why We Love It
Sam Hoffman

Most base layer bottoms are too heavy to recommend for active mountaineering. Put them on for an approach and you are sweating through them before you hit the glacier. The Capilene Lightweight Bottoms solve that problem by being light enough to actually wear while moving hard, layering cleanly under climbing pants without adding meaningful bulk or heat. Guides have been running the same two pairs for eight-plus years without replacing them, which is about as strong an endorsement of durability as exists. On Denali, one guide puts them on at 17 Camp and does not take them off until back at 14, which speaks to how well they regulate across a wide range of output levels. They are also comfortable enough to sleep in on cold nights, and light enough to justify bringing even when you are not sure you will need them. One candid note from a guide with five-plus seasons on these: hanging belays in tight quarters require some personal reorganization. You will figure it out.

“The Patagonia Capilene baselayer bottoms are magical. They are warm when you need it, yet can balance out moisture and wick away heat when its most important. I use this year-round for expeditions, day-trips, and chilling at home.”
— Sam Hoffman, RMI Guide

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

Who are these guys?

Patagonia

We stock Patagonia because they prove that performance and responsibility are not mutually exclusive. For decades, they have been the conscience of the outdoor industry, but more importantly for our customers, they build gear that simply works. From their legendary Regulator fleece to their bombproof shells, Patagonia equipment is a staple in our packs because it survives the abuse of the alpine environment season after season—and it’s all backed by their Ironclad Guarantee.
