The solution to the alpine layering dilemma.

The First Light 2.0 Stretch Hoody is the answer to the constant layer-shuffling game played on variable mountain days. Built to function as a "start-stop" active insulator, it offers the perfect balance of breathability for high-output approaches and retained warmth for chilly summits. The jacket features a highly durable, stretch-woven shell that resists the abrasion of rock and brush, allowing it to move seamlessly with you through technical terrain. From predawn starts to windy belays, this piece is engineered to stay on your body, regulating your temperature regardless of the effort or the elements.

Our Take

This hoody stays in our rotation because it handles the "stop-and-go" of alpine climbing better than almost anything else. It breathes well enough that you don't boil over on the skin track or the approach, but it still has enough loft to keep you warm at a windy belay. We love that it packs into its own pocket and clips to a harness, it’s the kind of versatile layer that eliminates the need to constantly switch jackets.

Why We Love It
Sam Hoffman

For climbers who run warm, finding a layer that keeps up without cooking you is the whole challenge. The First Light Stretch Hoodie solves it with a combination of stretch fabric and serious wicking that lets you move freely from snow to rock to ice without feeling constricted or clammy. Guides are putting it on at the start of a cold climb and keeping it on the whole way up, which says a lot about how well it manages output across changing effort levels. The insulation is substantial enough to matter in real cold, but the breathability keeps it from becoming a liability when you are working hard. It is the kind of layer you stop thinking about, which is exactly what you want.

“I am a huge fan of the Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hoodie. With an emphasis on stretch - the piece allows me to move freely from snow, rock, to ice without feels constricted. The wicking ability of this jacket is perfect for someone that runs a bit hot.”
— Sam Hoffman, RMI Guide

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

Who are these guys?

Black Diamond

Black Diamond has been outfitting mountain professionals for decades, building gear that’s tested on real climbs, not just in labs. We carry Black Diamond because their designs consistently deliver dependable performance where it matters most.
