Our Take

The shape-shifting partner for the vertical realm.

The Mutant 38 is the dedicated alpine specialist designed for the climber who refuses to compromise between hauling capacity and on-route precision. Whether you are trudging up a glacier with a full rack or fighting spindrift on a vertical ice pitch, this pack adapts to the objective. It functions as a robust load hauler on the approach but strips down to a streamlined climbing tool when every ounce matters. With a snow-shedding backpanel that refuses to ice up and a close-to-body fit that moves with you through technical cruxes, it is the versatile workhorse that ensures your gear never holds you back from the summit.

Why We Love It
James Bealer

The Mutant sits in a category of its own for technical climbing packs in the 38-liter range. The carry system handles weight better than anything else at this size, which means you can load it down for an overnight technical climb with bivy gear and it still moves with you rather than fighting you. The feature set is genuinely comprehensive, with attachment options that let you carry oversized loads on the outside and then strip the pack down for a summit push, effectively giving you a 30, 40, or 50-liter pack depending on what the day demands. Five-plus seasons of hard use and guides are still running the same packs, with Osprey's repair guarantee as a backstop if something does eventually give out. One honest note: if light and fast is the priority, the feature set that makes this pack so capable also adds weight. For that use case the BD Speed series is the better call. But for technical climbs where you are carrying real weight, nothing in this size range carries as well.

“The Osprey Mutant has the best weight carrying platform of the technical climbing packs. In addition, it has every feature you could ever need for climbing.”
— James Bealer, RMI Guide
