Temperature ratings indicate the lowest temperature at which a bag will keep the average sleeper safely warm — not necessarily comfortable. A 0°F bag, for example, will keep you alive and functional in 0°F conditions, but you’ll likely need a liner, pad, and proper layering to feel comfortable at that temperature. Always choose a bag rated slightly lower than the coldest conditions you expect.

Down bags are lighter, more compressible, and offer excellent warmth for their weight. Synthetic bags retain heat when wet and dry faster, making them great for damp environments or multi-day expeditions where drying gear isn’t easy.

Store your bag loose at home to preserve loft, and use a stuff sack — not a compression sack — when packing for trips. Keep it dry, avoid long-term compression, and always air it out after use to maintain performance and lifespan.
