The compact frame for big exposure.

The Shield M is engineered for the climber who needs the technical performance of a high-altitude glass without the overwhelming bulk of a standard frame. Designed specifically for smaller faces, it eliminates the dangerous gaps that allow reflected UV light to sneak in from below or the sides. Whether you are navigating a complex glacier or hiking a dusty approach, this frame offers a secure, fog-free interface that stays locked in place. With removable fabric side shields, it transitions seamlessly from a critical piece of safety gear on the summit to a stylish, breathable shade for the valley floor.

    Our Take

We chose the Julbo Shield as a Guide Pick because it solves the "two pairs of glasses" problem. For years, climbers had to choose between "looks good" and "works on a glacier." The Shield does both. The fabric side shields are a brilliant innovation, they are comfortable, packable, and don't dig into your cheeks like the old plastic ones.

    Why We Love It
    Lacie Smith

Our guides rely on the Shield because it manages the microclimate around your eyes better than traditional hard-sided glacier glasses. In the field, the fabric side shields block piercing reflected light on the upper mountain but breathe enough to prevent the dreaded "fog-out" when you're working hard on the ascent. The secure, curved temples mean you can look down at your crampon placements or into a crevasse without constantly pushing your glasses back up your nose.

“"These are the best because the sides are removeable meaning I can add more protection when the sun or other elements are coming at me from the side."
    -Lacie Smith”
    — Lacie Smith, RMI Guide

    Our Philosophy

    We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

    Who are these guys?

    Julbo

Julbo has been shielding eyes in the Alps for over a century. We carry them because they understand that on a glacier, eyewear is a critical component of your survival kit. When the UV index is off the charts and the wind is howling, you need glasses that don't fog, don't fall off, and block every photon of stray light. Julbo delivers that reliability, ensuring you come home with your vision intact.
