Boot Fitting Tips

EU and US Sizing

More sizes means a better fit! Most mountaineering footwear is built on European half sizes which are smaller increments than US half sizes. This gives us five extra sizes per size run, which gives you a better fit!

The evolution of a classic alpine workhorse.

The Mont Blanc Pro GTX is the lightest and most insulating boot in Scarpa's legendary Mont Blanc line, designed to be the definitive tool for technical mountaineering and mixed climbing. Balancing the warmth required for high-altitude objectives with the precision needed for vertical ice, it serves as a reliable platform for alpinists who refuse to compromise on performance. Whether you are front-pointing up a frozen waterfall or navigating a complex glacier, this boot offers a secure, automatic crampon-compatible interface that connects you directly to the mountain, ensuring stability and control in the most demanding terrain.

Our Take

The Mont Blanc Pro GTX is the boot we recommend when a customer says they want "one boot to do it all" in the lower 48 and beyond. It hits that elusive sweet spot—stiff enough to kick steps into bulletproof ice on Rainier, yet walkable enough that the approach doesn't feel like a death march. We particularly appreciate that Scarpa managed to drop the weight while actually increasing the warmth compared to previous iterations. It feels less like a clunky traditional boot and more like a modern technical tool that just happens to be warm.

Our Philosophy

We Simplify Outfitting

Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. Rainier safely. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

Who are these guys?

Scarpa

Scarpa has been handcrafting boots in the foothills of the Dolomites since 1938, and that heritage shows in every stitch. We carry them at Whittaker Mountaineering because they are arguably the masters of the "mountain fit". creating boots that lock the heel down securely while allowing enough toe room to prevent frostbite, a balance that is crucial for long days at altitude.

Fit

Scarpa boots typically feature a precise, technical fit; we recommend sizing up 1/2 size for mountaineering boots to accommodate thicker socks and foot swelling, though personal fit may vary.
